Purakei is an art and design studio based in Auckland, Aotearoa | New Zealand, offering a diverse range of modernised and conscionable wall design solutions. The name Pūrākei is born from two powerful ideas — pūrākau (ancestral narrative) and rākei (to adorn or enhance). At Pūrākei, we don’t just decorate spaces — we imbue them with meaning. Each design is a visual whakapapa: a story born from the whenua, connected to the cosmos, and carried by the next generation.
Every Pūrākei piece is a fragment of a much greater whole. When combined, our StoryTiles and StoryWalls become immersive cultural landscapes. We believe in creating dignity and delight in commercial spaces, helping venues become not just beautiful, but purposeful.
Our first release (September 2025) is Mokopuna, a collection of four foundational designs based on the stories and futures of our own grandchildren.

Our Purpose
At Pūrākei, our mission is to manifest cultural narratives onto various surfaces, enhancing the ambiance of any room and creating a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality. We aim to inspire creativity and elevate interior spaces, building a deep understanding and connection to the history of those spaces.
With a commitment to quality and design excellence, we strive to engage with an online community and social media platforms, furthering our reach and impact.

Our work centres indigenous knowledge, Māori artistry, and intergenerational storytelling. Using conscionable, socially and environmentally responsible materials — including premium acoustic substrates — we create design solutions that honour both people and place.
Our work is rooted in the principles of biophilic design and conscionable design. We believe that art should not only beautify but also restore — reconnecting people to the natural world and ensuring our practices protect it. That is why our StoryTiles and StoryWalls are created from Autex Cube™, a material made by transforming discarded plastic bottles into long-lasting acoustic panels. In this way, each piece removes waste from the system, softens the noise of our built environments, and replaces it with the resonance of cultural story.
We call this the true AI — Ancestral Intelligence. Every design carries the light of generations past, woven with narratives that guide us forward. By embedding cultural knowledge into sustainable materials, we create works that are more than decoration: they are guardians of wellbeing, silence, and story.
At present, we intentionally limit the number of StoryTiles and StoryWalls we release. This ensures that each piece remains collectible and precious — a bearer of ancestral light waves that infuses your home with meaning and value.
Our ambition is not to flood the world with products, but to plant treasures of story, carefully and with conscience, where they will live and shine for generations.
